Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio sat with reporters at this morning's @csmonitor breakfast and talked trade, Trump, and Tolstoy. He's one of a number of 2020 maybe's who have yet to announce. He said: "Don't mistake my deliberativeness for weakness or reluctance. It really is a deliberative process in my mind because I never thought I would be doing this. To want to be leader of the free world is a lot of self-examination and talking to family and talking to friends ... and thinking through all the things you need to do to step up." . . In the background: Our own Linda Feldmann, Washington bureau chief, who moderated. . . . On the menu: bacon and eggs + biscuits and potatoes. Good showing despite the rainy day. Props to @bischoff_b for putting it together!

Billionaire Tom Steyer holding morning a press conference as part of his "Need To Impeach" Summit. Supporters are set to hand deliver articles of impeachment against President Trump to members of Congress today. Beside Steyer is Texas Rep. Al Green, who has introduced at least two bills to impeachm the president since 2016. Behind them are families and a former federal prosecutor who support the cause, into which Steyer has invested millions of dollars. . . . I'm curious what folks think. Is it about time or premature? Worthwhile or futile? Something else altogether?
At a roundtable at her offices this afternoon, Speaker Nancy Pelosi talked (relatively freely) about the shutdown, the State of the Union, President Trump (whom she tried to avoid psychoanalyzing, with some success), the Democratic agenda, and sports (she likes to watch with the volume off so she can focus on the numbers). The room: rose walls, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and a view of the Washington Monument. Menu: sandwiches, salad, chips. (And chocolate. Madam Speaker loves her chocolate.) . . . Shortly after lunch broke up, the president announced that he had reached a deal with Congress to end the #governmentshutdown. House and Senate poised to pass bill to temporarily fund the government, and it's expected Trump will sign today. . . . Interesting couple days on the Hill! Still trying to get used to the flow of things, but can't say it's not exciting. #noobonthehill #congress #capitolhill
